“The
Serenity to Change the Things I Can”

I chose to blog about “The
Serenity to Change the Things I Can”. The title is just a small part of the
serenity prayer which is near and dear to me. This is a simple story of a man
who has found a way to incorporate one of the many questions that arise in the
life of recovery into his daily life. Picking up trash, for him has become
therapy and something he can change. When a lot of people hear something like
picking up litter or things we can change the literal meanings are what they
hear. For most people in recovery these words have a very different meaning.
Changing the things I can, means that we have done an inventory of sorts and
put a stop to trying to control everything in our lives. Limiting the actions
to things thing we can control instead of controlling others. Yes, picking up
litter is a part of that equation however; it goes much deeper than that. This
simple service to the community is a way to pay a little back to a world we
have taken advantage of for so long. Moreover, it a time consuming habit that
keeps our attention off of our past wreckage and helps us to focus on something
positive that we can feel good about. So the next time you see a random person
picking up litter, it may not be trash their picking up, it may be pieces of
their life, one piece at a time.
